Welcome to Our Backyard Pond

Written on March 1, 2010 – 1:37 pm | by Backyard Pond

A backyard pond in a suburban garden.

What started as a whim on a mid-summer’s day turned into a backyard pond holding hundreds of gallons of water and an assortment of bright orange fish. This water garden oasis delights my family with sights and sounds that are always changing and totally natural.

Designing, building and maintaining a backyard pond is no easy task, but it is so worth the effort put into it. Backyard ponds and water gardens can be made to suit any yard or garden.

Backyard Pond Lanscaping Tips for a Natural Look

Written on February 22, 2010 – 12:26 pm | by Backyard Pond
Backyard pond design tips.

Backyard pond design tips.

The initial look of a just-installed backyard pond usually consists of a ring of a recently dug dirt and some rocks holding down the pond liner along the edge. Unless you have very unusual tastes, this will not be the way you leave your backyard pond landscaping. There are many different styles and designs you can use depending upon your personal tastes and the aesthetics of the rest of your yard and garden.

The materials, decor items and plants you choose will depend upon garden themes and what else you have displayed and growing in your yard. For example, a formal garden with trimmed box words and ornate cement ornaments is more likely to have a poured or brick wall around the pond with carefully planted foliage plants surrounding it. A cottage style garden with more natural plantings will lend its style to the backyard pond landscaping through the use of trailing plants and natural rocks. Read the rest of this entry »

Terra Cotta

Terra Cotta pots make good fountains.

Recycle old flower pots into an attractive fountain for your deck or patio. While one large pot or planter can make an attractive miniature water garden, a pair or even a trio of graduated flower pots can add more visual interest and the delight of trickling water sounds.

Above Ground Koi Ponds – Things to Consider

Written on February 1, 2010 – 8:37 am | by Backyard Pond

An above ground koi pond can satisfy your desire to have a water garden in your yard. Whether you construct one in a spot on your lawn and surround it with flowers and benches or build it directly on your patio or deck, there are several important considerations to take into account. Above ground koi ponds require more specific planning and care than an in-ground water garden does.

When I dug the backyard pond in my yard, all I had to do was choose a location with minimal tree roots (to make digging easier) and the appropriate amount of daily sunlight. When building above ground koi ponds, it is important to take local climate into account. In hot areas or even in extra warm pockets of your yard, an above ground water garden will suffer from excessive warming. It would be virtually impossible to over-winter fish and plants in above ground koi ponds in colder climates. Read the rest of this entry »

If you want to keep a goldfish outdoor pond that will support aquatic life in a healthy manner, is it important to plan from the beginning. Many people purchase standard comet or even feeder goldfish to live outside in a water garden. They are hearty in cool weather and are very showy with their bright orange scales.
